Every year, my kids and I create a nature zone to honor the changing seasons of spring and fall. Sweet traditions and rituals like these help my kids transition from one season to the next. For the recent autumnal equinox, we created a landscape with flowers and wild fruits representing summer and dry grasses and leaves representing autumn.

How do you create a landscape?

Once you’ve chosen a spot, you’ll need to gather some organic material to use around you. Twigs, leaves, grasses, flowers, berries, pinecones, and the acorns work well.

Use something that is important to you because it will be your “coordinating center.” After that, use the other materials you’ve collected to build the rest of your zone. Place the objects near the center first, then move outwards from the center until you create a circle.

• Complete your zone. Continue creating shapes until you run out of materials and your landscape is complete. And remember, you can make it however you want! You can use bright colors or muted earth tones. Make it big or small. Make it simple or complex as you like.

If you’re not familiar with mandalas, they are symmetrical, circular, geometric patterns that were first created by Buddhist monks in the Himalayas about 2,000 years ago. These days, they are recognized worldwide for their healing properties creating a mandala is incredibly relaxing .Usually, people draw or paint them but you can make them from many things. One of the most popular places to create a natural mandala is in the woods with fallen leaves, feathers, small stones, twigs, and pine cones don’t disturb any living things or pick anything that’s still growing.If you can’t get out into the woods, your local park, the beach, or even your own garden are great places to create a nature zone.
